International Legal and Ethical Issues in Business Essay
International Legal and Ethical Issues in Business - Essay Example 113). For instance, if the employee chose to present the issue to the higher management, then it is expected that the company would incur losses for product test and recall. However, the action would benefit customers to stop from patronizing the defective products. In the code of ethics, it is an employeeââ¬â¢s responsibility to act in professional manner and report promptly to the higher management about any information he or she knows about wherein the business is directly involve so that it could be given appropriate corrective actions. However, ââ¬Å"it is not uncommon practice for lower-level employees to communicate upwards about only those matters which are likely to appeal to people at higher levels (Rashid, 1983, p. 133); therefore, the employee should present first the subject matter to his or her next in command particularly if the companyââ¬â¢s structure is following an upward communication by subordinates. In addition, he or she is not at all responsible to tell directly to the companyââ¬â¢s CEO and executives about the knowledge of potentially defective products that are being sold to the customers until such time that it is delegated to the immediate supervisor. In the first place, the employee is uncertain about the organizationââ¬â¢s ethical guidelines which are supposed to be communicated to them to ensure that they understand the companyââ¬â¢s values and policies. Lastly, he is just maintaining the welfare of the company and at the same time fulfilling his duties, respecting the higher authorities and maintaining social order. Values for professionals and employees in particular are not bound for the organization alone but it needs to serve for the good of the public. * How would you specifically notify customers of such an occurrence? Satisfied customer contributes higher revenue growth, therefore, it is their right to be notified and it is the companyââ¬â¢s responsibility to provide them with real information. In case th e issue is effectively presented to the top management, then it is the companyââ¬â¢s responsibility to test and recall the product to know the defects. This process is costly but it could prevent further losses. Also, it is one of their ethical and social responsibilities to secure the safety of their customers in return for their reputation (Jennings, 2009, p. 511; Shaw, 2010, p. 222). It should consider the seriousness and frequency of the injury that the product could create to the customers and remember that quality of products should be prioritized first. The customer will be notified through a press release, describing to them the real problem, guarantee their safety, and most importantly, ask for an apology. In this case wherein defective products are involved, it is a requirement that the company should respond promptly and efficiently. It should ensure that the remaining defective products will not reach the customers by tracking them through helpful signs, and setting u p tracking system for customersââ¬â¢ complaints. Through this way of keeping the customer informed, everything will be centralized and easier to control. * What kind of internal actions would you take to prevent future problems? The employee must define the problem clearly and be responsible on all his or her actions. For instance, if he or she discovers material information that involves the business, he or she should promptly report this to the

Time Management Essay Example for Free
Time Management Essay One of the most important aspects of completing an education course is the amount of time spent on your course study. The better you are at setting aside regular study time and keeping to a schedule, the more successful youââ¬â¢ll be in completing your course work with a satisfactory grade. Completion wonââ¬â¢t happen if you are a procrastinator! So, take a few moments before starting your course to think about your schedule. Be realistic. If you find yourself falling behind, reevaluate your priorities and make adjustments where needed. Here are some additional things to think about: Set aside dedicated study time (maybe in 1/2 hour chunks) and let nothing interrupt this time. Break assignments into small tasks that can be accomplished in given time periods. Determine what time of day is your best. Tackle the more difficult tasks during this time of day to take advantage of your greatest concentration and attention level. Establish one or more quiet, comfortable study areas where you have easy access to all necessary materials. Make your selection based on acceptable noise levels, light level, study-conducive furniture (chair and/or desk or study table), and minimal distractions. Keep in mind the time it takes to travel between home, school, work, and your selected study spot. If your instructor has not provided course deadlines, set them yourself and stick with them. If you start falling behind, set aside more time to catch up. Donââ¬â¢t put off completing your coursework to the end of your enrollment period. Do not let a problem or lack of understanding hold you up ââ¬â set it aside for a short time so you can come back to it with fresh eyes. If you still donââ¬â¢t get it ââ¬â ask for help from your instructor or from other students in the class. If this is the first distance course youââ¬â¢ve taken, you may soon see how easy it is to fall behind your intended schedule. By setting mid-course targets that are realistic and obtainable, you can complete the course successfully and count distance learning as another accomplishment! The institution will maintain an academic environment in which freedom to teach, conduct research, learn and administer the university is protected. Students will benefit from this environment by accepting responsibility for their role in the academic community. The principles of the student code are designed to encourage communication, foster academic integrity and defend freedoms of inquiry, discussion and expression across the university community. Institution requires students to conduct themselves honestly and responsibly, and to respect the rights of others. Conduct that unreasonably interferes with the learning environment or violates the rights of others is prohibited. Students and student organizations are responsible for ensuring that they and their guests comply with the code while on property owned or controlled by the university or at activities authorized by the university. The university may initiate disciplinary action and impose disciplinary sanctions against any student or student organization found responsible for committing, attempting to commit or intentionally assisting in the commission of any of the following prohibited forms of conduct: * cheating, plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty * forgery, falsification, alteration or misuse of documents, funds or property * damage or destruction of property * theft of property or services * harassment * endangerment, assault or infliction of physical harm * disruptive or obstructive actions * misuse of firearms, explosives, weapons, dangerous devices or dangerous chemicals * failure to comply with university directives * misuse of alcohol or other intoxicants or drugs * violation of published university policies, regulations, rules or procedures * any other actions that result in unreasonable interference with the learning environment or the rights of others. This list is not intended to define prohibited conduct in exhaustive terms, but rather offers examples as guidelines for acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Honesty is a primary responsibility of you and every other UAF student. The following are common guidelines regarding academic integrity: 1. Students will not collaborate on any quizzes, in-class exams, or take-home exams that contribute to their grade in a course, unless the course instructor grants permission. Only those materials permitted by the instructor may be used to assist in quizzes and examinations. 2. Students will not represent the work of others as their own. A student will attribute the source of information not original with himself or herself (direct quotes or paraphrases) in compositions, theses, and other reports. No work submitted for one course may be submitted for credit in another course without the explicit approval of both instructors. Alleged violations of the Code of Conduct will be reviewed in accordance with procedures specified in regentsââ¬â¢ policy, university regulations and UAF rules and procedures. For additional information and details about the Student Code of Conduct, contact the dean of student affairs, visit www. alaska. edu/bor/ or refer to the student handbook that is printed in the back of the class schedule for each semester. Students are encouraged to review the entire code.

Macbeths Incredible Lady :: Free Macbeth Essays
Macbeth's Incredible Lady à à In William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth there are two main characters, one of which is more believable than the other. Lady Macbeth is not as lifelike or realistic as her husband. In this essay we shall explore her character. In "Macbeth as the Imitation of an Action" Francis Fergusson specifies the fears within Lady Macbeth: à I do not need to remind you of the great scenes preceding the murder, in which Macbeth and his Lady pull themselves together for their desperate effort. If you think over these scenes, you will notice that the Macbeths understand the action which begins here as a competition and a stunt, against reason and against nature. Lady Macbeth fears her husband's human nature, as well as her own female nature, and therefore she fears the light of reason and the common dayllight world. As for Macbeth, he knows from the first that he is engaged in an irrational stunt: "I have no spur / To prick the sides of my intent, but only / Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself / And falls on the other." In this sequence there is also the theme of outwitting or transcending time, an aspect of nature's order as we know it: catching up the consequences, jumping the life to come, and the like. (108) Clark and Wright in their Introduction to The Complete Works of William Shakespeare interpret the character of Lady Macbeth: Lady Macbeth is of a finer and more delicate nature. Having fixed her eye upon the end - the attainment for her husband of Duncan's crown - she accepts the inevitable means; she nerves herself for the terrible night's work by artificial stimulants; yet she cannot strike the sleeping king who resembles her father. Having sustained her weaker husband, her own strength gives way; and in sleep, when her will cannot control her thoughts, she is piteously afflicted by the memory of one stain of blood upon her little hand.à (792) In "Memoranda: Remarks on the Character of Lady Macbeth," Sarah Siddons comments on the Lady's cold manner: [Macbeth] announces the King's approach; and she, insensible it should seem to all the perils which he has encountered in battle, and to all the happiness of his safe return to her, -- for not one kind word of greeting or congratulations does she offer, -- is so entirely swallowed up by the horrible design, which has probably been suggested to her by his letters, as to have forgotten both the one and the other.

Live Earth
This week the biggest news about the environment are the Live Earth concerts scheduled across the globe.à Former Vice President Al Goreââ¬â¢s vision of an international musical effort to fight global warming has been big news for moths with musical acts like The Police and Smashing Pumpkins kicking off their reunion tours at the concerts. The problem with the media coverage of this even has been that it is mostly superficial. Stingââ¬â¢s announcement that The Police would use the concert to kickoff their reunion tour was bigger news than Goreââ¬â¢s efforts to find a way to plan a concert in Antarctica, so that all seven continents would host one of the concerts. The concerts are being billed as a chance to get 2 billion people together to raise awareness about global climate change, but the reality is very little about the concerts seem to be promoting global environmental awareness. However, Live Earth does seem to be promoting a sort of international relations above and beyond the governments of nations.à Though many of the concerts are in countries which are American allies, at least in some fashion, Gore has gone out of his way to include some big names that are in need of a climate wake up call. Live Earth China, in Shanghai, is in one of the fastest growing emitters of greenhouse gases. Live Earth Australia in Sydney will be under a hole in the ozone layer, but no one seems to be mentioning that. They are more interested in the reunions of Genesis and Spinal Tap at Wembley Stadium. The remarkable thing from an international relations stand point is that it pulls together musical artists from all over the world and all genres of music. Unfortunately, the international relations that it seems to be fostering are all feel good relations and require no actual effort from anyone involved. They simply have to show up and be entertained by some of the worldââ¬â¢s top musicians and maybe listen to a few minutes of factoids about global climate change. In reality, the Live Earth concerts appear to be doing little to promote actual environmental awareness or international relations. Instead, it seems to be little more than an excuse for an international day of music. There is nothing wrong with promoting peace and environmental awareness through music, but Live Earth seems like a farce.

Analyzing Psychological Disorders Essay
A psychiatric or psychological disorder is a disorder of psychological function severe enough to warrant treatment by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. Schizophrenia, emotional disorders, Anxiety and Touretteââ¬â¢s syndrome are all classified as psychiatric disorders. The distinguishing line between neuropsychological disorders and psychiatric disorders is quite thin. Though the two types of disorders are a result of a dysfunctional brain, the malfunctions which create psychiatric disorders remain undefined. Psychiatric disorders are often linked to environmental factors as well as dysfunction of the brain. As psychological research advances, treatments and a better understanding of psychiatric disorders comes to bear. The term schizophrenia means a psychic break or ââ¬Å"splitting of psychic functionâ⬠. (Pinel, 2007). The NIH & National Library of Medicine web site defines schizophrenia as having five different categories: catatonic, disorganized, paranoid, residual, and undifferentiated. (NIH & National Library of Medicine, 2008). Each category of the disorder has a specific set of symptoms that is mostly unique to that category of the disorder, but schizophrenia in general creates a delusional picture of reality which disrupts the personââ¬â¢s behavior, logic and emotions. A good example of schizophrenia and the related dissociative disorders are the movie Sybil or the more recent film A Beautiful Mind, and another fine example is the television show United States of Tara. Both movies and the Showtime networkââ¬â¢s series depict the lives of a person suffering with schizophrenia or dissociative disorders. Neuroleptics and antipsychotic drugs are known to alleviate symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Clozapine is a type of neuroleptic that does not produce side effects like those associated with Parkinsonââ¬â¢s disease. The medication is known to cause blood disorders. Neuroleptic medication is used to block the dopamine receptors though it takes time for the drug to lessen schizophrenic symptoms. Though neuroleptics help schizophrenics, only certain patients do benefit from the relief these drugs can offer. Schizophrenic patients suffering from hallucinations and incoherence react to the medication; however; schizophrenics suffering from cognitive defects are not affected. The NIH & National Library of Medicine web site mentioned atypical antipsychotics have proven to treat symptoms for schizophreniaà with few side effects and is the best option for those suffering with schizophrenia. (NIH & National Library of Medicine, 2008). A surgeon in the 1950ââ¬â¢s and early 1960ââ¬â¢s used a drug called chlorpromazine on patients to alleviate swelling prior to surgery. The doctor noticed that the medicine acted as a calming agent and recommended chlorpromazine to relax hard to control psychotic patients. Chlorpromazine did not assuage the symptoms of psychosis, but the medicine showed potential for easing some symptoms in schizophrenic patients. During the research process the side effects of chlorpromazine which are symptoms of Parkinsonââ¬â¢s disease were evident. Researchers concluded that people suffering from Parkinsonââ¬â¢s disease die from a minute level of dopamine. Schizophrenics display a high-level of dopamine. Therefore Parkinsonââ¬â¢s and Schizophrenia seem to be on the opposite end of the spectrum. A breakthrough emerged in the dopamine theory with Carlsson and Lindqvist. The duo studied the Chlorpromazine in relation to schizophrenia and revised the dopamine theory of schizophrenia. Chlorpromazine was found to block dopamine receptors instead of the original theory of reducing dopamine levels. Therefore, the duo concluded through research that schizophrenia wasà not due to high-levels of dopamine, but with over activity at the dopamine receptors. (Pinel, 2007). Emotional disorders are another form of a psychiatric disorder. Emotional disorders include: bipolar disorder, depression, and mania. Depression is classified as a state of unbearable sadness. At some point in a personââ¬â¢s life one will encounter a period of depression due to a tragedy such as loss of a loved one, poor health, or a series of bad luck. However, most people will break through the grip of depression and return to a normal life. Those with depression have a hard time seeing anything in a positive light. Depression ruins relationships at work and in the home; the disease also takes over the person making it difficult to engage in a normal day-to-day routine. Mania is the opposite of depression and is linked to high energy and impulse. A person suffering from mania appears to be full of energy or ââ¬Å"hopped upâ⬠on energy drinks like Red-Bull and caffeine; they are filled with such enthusiasm, have boundless energy and talk fast. Though it sounds like an exceptionalà thing to be constantly in a good spirits there is a negative side to the disorder. Impulsiveness is a part of mania and many suffers act on impulse not thinking before they do anything. The end result is unfinished projects, bills that cannot be paid, and relationships ruined. A person who suffers from manic episodes and depression episodes is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. There are two theories created to explain the causes of emotional disorders. According to Pinel (2007), ââ¬Å"The monoamine theory of depression holds that depression is associated with under-activity at serotonergic and noradrenergic synapses. It is based on the fact that monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, and selective norepinephrinereuptake inhibitors are all agonistsà of serotonin, norepinephrine, or both.â⬠The second theory is Diathesis-Stress model. The second theory focuses on genetic predispositions of a person as well as environmental factors that influence the disorder. This means that people who have stress early on will overreact to stressful situations later in life in turn causing depression. (Pinel, 2007). There are four types of medicine used to treat emotional disorders. Iproniazid is a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) initially used to treat tuberculosis but failed. On the contrary the patients did not have as many depressive thoughts about the illness. Iproniazid has severe effects when combined with tyramine rich foods. Imipamine is a tricyclic antidepressant which has proven to be more effective than MAOIââ¬â¢s. The next medication is Lithium which was shown to alleviate symptoms of mania. The discovery was made when a researcher tested guinea pigs and the results proved to calm them. Lithium is used as a mood stabilizer in bi-polar patients since it blocks the patient from transitioning between extreme highs and lows. The fourth medicine used more commonly in recent years is selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The most common of the SSRIââ¬â¢s are Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. The SSRIââ¬â¢s are reported to have few side effects and are able to treat multiple disorders. (Pinel, 2007). ââ¬Å"Anxiety is chronic fear that persists in the absence of any direct threat.â⬠(Pinel, 2007). Anxiety is accompanied by rapid heartbeat, heavy or difficulty breathing and high blood pressure. There are fiveà types of anxiety disorders including: general anxiety, phobias, obsessive compulsiveness, panic, and post traumatic stress disorder. Theories involving anxiety disorders presume the amygdala has a role in anxiety disorders. The brainââ¬â¢s involvement in anxiety is cloudy at best since each patient tested shows different results. (Pinel, 2007). Benzodiazepines and serotonin agonists are the most effective medications used to combat anxiety. Valium and Librium are two of the most commonly prescribed medications, though they tend to make the patient drowsy. The medicine isà also known to be highly addictive and is recommended only for short-term usage. Buspirone is a serotonin agonist which relaxes the body and causes sleepiness. (Pinel, 2007). Touretteââ¬â¢s syndrome is known for involuntary movements or sounds known as tics. The Cedars-Sinai web site notes that the tics can vary from body movements and vocal tics. The tics can be a little as involuntary eye blinking or more noticeable yelling of obscene words or phrases. Little is known as to the cause of Touretteââ¬â¢s, however there is speculation that the limbic cortex, association cortex and thalamus are connected to the disorder. (Pinel, 2007). With the cause still a mystery there is no cure for Touretteââ¬â¢s, but though counseling, relaxation therapy and hypnosis healthcare professionals can help treat the disorder. (Cedars-Sinai. 2008). Psychiatric disorders vary in many ways. Schizophrenia affects the brain and causes hallucinations, emotional disorders affect a personââ¬â¢s mood in extreme ways, and anxiety causes fear and health issues, while Touretteââ¬â¢s causes tics ranging from subtle to severe. Over time psychological advances in research and treatment have been made allowing professionals in the field to effectively treat each disorder. References CEDARS-SINAI. (2008). Traditional Chinese marriages.
Traditional Chinese marriages. Ember (2002, p.343) defines marriage as "a socially approved sexual and economic union, usually between a woman and a man". Because marriage customs differ widely according to culture, it is obviously of great interest to the cultural anthropologist. For example, marriage rites in some cultures may involve highly complex ceremonial rituals, whereas marriage rites in other cultures may be relatively simple. The Chinese (in this essay, meaning native inhabitants of China) seem to have an affinity for elaborate rituals; like other Chinese celebrations, a traditional Chinese marriage involves several elaborate rituals, some of which are performed before the actual wedding day. This essay will examine each part of the wedding from the perspective of a particular Chinese subculture.'Visiting girls' is a courtship ritual practiced by the Dai ethnic group that typically takes place during the agricultural slack season (An Liu, 2002). When the lights in their houses have been put out, bonfir es are built outside the village (ibid).Young Couple in Relationship ConflictYoung women sit around the fires with their spinning wheels (ibid). Young men drape themselves with red blankets and walk around the young women as they play musical instruments (ibid). When a young man sees a young woman who strikes his fancy, he approaches her slowly (ibid). If the attraction is mutual, the young woman takes out a small stool which has been concealed under her long skirt and invites him to sit beside her (ibid). The young man then seats himself and wraps his red blanket around the young woman (ibid). A heart-to-heart talk then ensues (ibid). Two weeks before the wedding takes place, the Hokkien matchmaker delivers the dowry money to the bride's parents inside a red packet (Blu Inc Media (S) Pte Ltd., 1999). Da Vincji essays
Da Vincji essays Born April 25,1452 Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the small town of Anchiano. His father Piero a successful notary, and his mother Caterina a peasant women. Leonardo has contributed much to our culture artistically and scientifically. As a boy, Leonardo was fascinated with the birds and flowers of nature, which are seen in his paintings in adulthood. His superb quality of the detailed landscapes shows off Leonardos artistic qualities. One of Leonardos most famous works is the portrait of the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between the time period of 1503 through 1506. He used oil colors on a wood background. The subject in the painting is a younger Florentine female whom was married in 1495 to the popular Francesco del Giocondo. The portrait is also known as the La Giocondo. Rejecting the painting, Leonardo carried it around with him everywhere he traveled until his death in France where it remains today. This painting is remarkable for a variety of things. First, Leonardo uses two artistic techniques known as Sfumato and Chiaroscuro. The Italians call sfumato- the blurred outline and mellowed colors that allow one form to merge with another and always leave something to our imagination. (WebMuseum 1998) Sfumato is characterized by subtle, almost infinitesimal transitions between color areas, creating a delicately atmospheric haze or smoky affect; it is especially evident in the delicate gauzy robes worn by the sitter and in her enigmatic smile.(Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 1998) The Mona Lisa looks as if she has a slight smile on her face. Her mouth lends the painting with a gentle atmospheric effect. Leonardos technique of light and shade used continuously doesnt allow us to quite determine what hour of the day it is. This painting has the power to grab and hold our ...
